The Inside Story from National Geographic Photographer Joel Sartore's Studio

Just My Opinion

Since this is my first blog post, I’ll try to make it count.

For years I’ve been trying to save things, from endangered species to treasures placed along the curb on trash night. The January issue of National Geographic illustrates the former, the CBS Sunday Morning Show the latter.

To me it’s a real shame when we don’t think before we act. What we do has real consequences, sometimes forever. It’s my job to point that out.

All of us can play a role in the future of our planet. Start at home. Turn down the lights and the heat just a bit. Drive a smaller car. Reduce what you buy. Reuse what you buy. Certainly recycle, but think of that as a last resort. Know that every time you pay for something, you’re telling the world that you approve of how the product was made, what it’s made from and the fuel that was used to bring it to you.

Please, spend your money well.

Are you still eating Runza burgers daily?! Do you recycle all those wrappers — or are they still in your truck?

Love the blog Joel… (and Katie…!) Loved the Sunday Morning piece, and while I dont’ case the neighborhood, I agree with you sentiments. I’ve noticed a benefit from the economy, kinda related to the reuse/recycle notion – I’ve found that I don’t need as much ’stuff’ and I’m just as happy, if not way more so, than when I made purchases unconciously during better times. I apparently just don’t need things that much, and I cringe when I look at old lists with things that I ‘needed’, and how today, those ‘things’ seem an awful waste. I feel this post is getting a bit Zen, but to me the issues of high-consuming and re-using/recycling come from the same gene. (BTW guys, I’m having a garage sale in May . . .)

Your message was well presented here in Madrid, and I hope it was well taken. It was a great pleasure to meet you (you turned out to be one of those folks who is exactly as I imagined s/he would be!) and I look forward to seeing much more of you here in your blog, and in National Geographic, and hopefully to meeting up with you sometime in Lincoln! May you continue to fight the good fight of faith! Best wishes. Ana Sims
