Lincoln Journal Star Article on Joel & Family

Hi folks — Katie again.  Joel is currently on assignment, but I wanted to share an article from the local paper about him, the family, and his wife’s experience with breast cancer. Kathy is fully recovered, by the way, and we’re all very grateful that her treatment was a success.

Joel, I just finished reading Photographing Your Family and have been impressed by how personal a book it is — how full of you and your family it is. I read a lot of photo books but this one has a lot of heart, it’s like no other photo book I’ve picked up. Lots of technique, plus some great stories behind the personal family moments captured. Why is there no other book out there that bothers to list the standard f-stops in order? Duh. Great diagram.

I couldn’t read on without thinking what a saint Kathy is for letting you take so many pictures. I was surprised how brief the mention of her cancer is in the book, but then I loved your quote about how a photo can freeze a moment in time, the way you choose to remember it.

I will do a lot more shooting of my preschoolers overhead to avoid capturing the mess that orbits them. Also I will be investing in more ice cream cones as bribery to hold still for just a few more of Dad’s shots, what a great idea.

I stumbled upon you via the PBS special in a hotel room one night, and am really glad I found you. Thanks for your inspiring work.
